Time to fill out resumes, and call up connections with Nokia, as they will soon be looking for a new CEO. It is being reported that Nokia has started a search for a new CEO. The recent trailing to other smartphones, has put Nokia in a very difficult position. It is being speculated that the current CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo could be booted as early as the end of August. Google/Android phones, and iPhones have been making massive pushes in the wireless market. Nokia has been slow to response to these pushes. They stalled the release of Symbian 3 earlier in the year. Then just recently, they announced a switch in OS from Symbian to Linux. Upon these proceedings, many key exects and other management positions were reshuffled. Now, it looks like it will be happening with the biggest piece of all. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (1) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 85 |

As phones grow in both scope, and features battery life will continually be drained. Having amazing features on a phone is great, but it doesn't do you much good if the battery only lasts 4 hours. Nokia has devised an interesting, and sci-fi sounding solution to the problem - Piezoelectric Kinetic Energy Harvester. That isn't fake, it's the name of Nokia's latest patent. With such a complicated name, the technology behind it is rather simple. The idea of the technology can be summed up in one word, 'crystals'. Electricity is generated from the movement of crystals which then is used to charge a batter. Simple movements will be enough to generate enough electricity to help extend battery life. It hasn't been reported how much electricity will be generated, so we have more information to stay tuned in for. The Nokia n900 is the flagship phone for mobile phone company we all know. The handset is being alluded to as a mobile computer. However, it's been stymied by the fact that there have been no compatible apps released for it. This all changes today, as The Ovi Store is launching for the n900. The phone uses the Maemo-Linux platform, which up until now didn't use Ovi. Many experts are optimistic that this could open up the n900 to a broader audience, because up until now Linux experience was required for full use. The creator of the Pre and Pixi models, Palm, has been rumored to be a gleam in the eye of Nokia. It is being reported that Nokia is interested in Palm due to the company's roster of smartphones throughout the years. An acquisition of this nature could go a long way in taking it to the competition, Apple and Blackberry. Palm's shares shot up 8% today in light of these rumors which gives them a bit more validity. For a good portion of this year, there have been talks of someone buying out Palm but as of yet nothing has solidified. The latest rumor comes off the lawsuit that Nokia is taking Apple over patent infringements. This could be just a coincidence, or a sign of Nokia trying to make a bold statement. As of now, Motorola, Dell, and Microsoft have all been rumored to be interested in purchasing Palm. One brand of smartphones just got smarter. But it might be a while before it rises to the head of its class. That’s because Nokia’s opening of its brand new application store, the Ovi Store, is not the first of its kind. Blackberry and Microsoft also opened application stores for their smartphones earlier this year, and Android’s apps hit the market in late 2008. Still, most popular of all is Apple’s app store, soaring past one billion downloads.
But Ovi’s 2am (EST) opening time didn’t come off without issues. The Ovi Store publicly apologized to its users via their blog, citing heavy traffic as the source of the problems. Their apology receive mixed reactions from users, but a lot of users are definitely excited about the new applications available for their phones. Nokia launched the Ovi Store with availability in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Singapore, Spain, the US, and the UK, with promises that they will be adding other countries in the future. While Nokia’s offering of operator billing will put it ahead of other app store competitors, operator billing will not be available until the latter half of this year. No worries, though, as US users will be able to make purchases via credit card—just like all the other app stores. So, what apps are recommended for Nokia users? With over 20,000 apps to choose from on opening day, the possibilities are endless. According to Eric John, who heads up product marketing for Ovi, some must-have apps include Gravity (a Twitter manager), Trapster (basically a non-radar radar detector), AP News, WorldMate (a traveler’s all-in-one help), Fodors, and EarthComber (an enhanced GPS guide for North America). Obviously, Nokia is making use of their GPS enabled phones, which is a feature included in most of their newer models. All told, it might have been helpful for the Ovi Store to do a little more testing before the official launch. But it won’t be enough to close down shop. Besides, the Ovi shopping experience might be a little easier in the coming months on new Nokia phones. Nokia plans to preload the Ovi Store on upcoming models. Living in one of the more technological advanced countries in the world, we get pampered on new, and emerging technologies. Generally, the more advanced handsets cost a great amount of money as well, so not everyone can afford to get in on the action. The Nokia 5030 is a newly released phone, for markets who are on a budget or really like FM radios. It might not have a touch screen, or have built-in GPS, but the Nokia 5030 does have some features that will attract users. If you like listening to the radio, the 5030 comes with a built-in FM antenna. There's also loudspeakers so you can listen without plugging in earphones. The phone will cost $50 with an upgrade, or two year contract. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (8) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 930 |

As the economy takes its toll, everyone is feeling the effects. Nokia, is no exception as they're reporting some heavy losses to profit during the fourth quarter of 2008. Net Profit was down $2.39 billion, from Nokia's profit in 2007. Actual sales plummeted from $20.5 billion, to $16.4 billion. Nokia commented on the bleak numbers, in typical fashion, "We are taking action to reduce overall costs and to preserve our strong capital structure. This is clearly our top priority in the current economic environment...In recent weeks, the macroeconomic environment has deteriorated rapidly, with even weaker consumer confidence, unprecedented currency volatility and credit tightness continuing to impact the mobile communications industry." If you read between the fine print, this could definitely mean layoffs for Nokia. It doesn't necessarily mean that they'll be giving layoffs or giving them exclusively. Actually, Nokia promises to reduce production costs of handsets dramatically to ease the economic burden. Here's hoping that the production costs are enough to keep all of the Nokia workers employed Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (12) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 857 |

The Nokia n97 was definitely the darling of Nokia's CES 2009 lineup, but there were some other product lines you should definitely check out. This is quite an endeavour for Nokia, but with this line they look to provide different handsets to people with specific uses. The Nokia 1006 is your basic, 'I just want to make a call' phone. It come supported with Bluetooth as well, and has a curved ergonomical shape as well. If you're into the customization scene, while having a great social device then check out, Nokia 7510 . Along with the customizing, and social features, there's a 2.0 megapixel camera. When your text messaging, the Nokia e63 will more than likely be the phone you want to use. It has a full QWERTY keyboard, the Symbian S60 OS, and WiFi. Here is a video from WebProNews , showcasing all of the Nokia product lines showcased at CES 2009. In the midst of the election yesterday, it was easy to miss some big Nokia news that dropped stateside. Nokia has officially announced that the Nokia n96 will finally be sold in their brick and mortar stores. Before the announcement the only viable means of obtaining a Nokia n96 was ordering it from an online vendor. The Chicago, and New York stores will be the first places to have the Nokia n96 available. This is a great day for people curious about the Nokia n96. Because as much information about the handset there is online, nothing beats being able to actually see the product and hold it. There are quite a few people (us included) who have been waiting for the past few weeks for symbiansigned.com to re-enable the open-signed signing service so that we can get cool freeware apps like RotateMe and SlideHangup installed on our / your phones - Well they have finished their "upgrading" and have launched a new "Open Signed Online" service - which to be fair is 100% totally free and available to anyone BUT (didn't you just know that there was a BUT coming...) the open signed service is aimed at developers and without going into to many technical details only the application developer can sign their application for their phone Well done SymbianSigned - you have just killed open source symbian development! While it is true that application developers CAN develop their apps so that they are not the "owner" it still means that all previous apps cannot be installed on your N95's. There is currently a lot of discussion going on at the moment on various forums (including the SymbianSigned developer forums) and no-one is 100% sure if this situation is permanent or not. I am just waiting to see if purchasing a Publisher ID will allow me to sign files for you guys - if it does then I will spend my dosh to get one and get you guys your files! Well not quite but it's very funny all the same... This video turned up on YouTube last week (sorry I was so slow getting it up here) but it shows a young guy using his N95 to hack into a big screen at a train station and then stream live HD quality video to it... This is a fake but it's really funny and worth a watch - I especially like the bit where he singles out a guy in the crowd with his N95 and tells him he has won a car! The new all black N95 8Gb started to ship from Nokia yesterday - with a little surprise installed... Nokia have teamed up with Sony entertainment to pre-load the 8Gb with the full Spiderman 3 film PLUS ringtone, message alert tone, theme and screensaver! Why? Well according to Nokia: "The Movie sees Spider-Man's suit turn jet-black and enhance his powers and, in its latest incarnation, the Nokia N95 has undergone a similar transformation to emerge as the Nokia N95 8GB."
