Nokia Bringing Symbian Back In House

A lot can change in two years. This is the lesson Nokia is learning, as they've decided to take their operating system, Symbian, off the open source status. Back in 2008, Nokia decided to open up Symbian and allow developers to tinker with it. This was before the iPhone, or Google Android really made it big.

Handset manufacturers have been dropping Symbian in favor of other OS's, so they decided it was time for a change.

Tim Holbrow, executive director of the Symbian Foundation, had this to say, "There has since been a seismic change in the mobile market but also more generally in the economy, which has led to a change in focus for some of our funding board members"

"The result of this is that the current governance structure for the Symbian platform -- the foundation -- is no longer appropriate."

While Symbian has taken a hit in market share, it still leads overall at 37%.
