Hackers Bring Android to Nokia Phones
User Rating: / 0

Wednesday, 01 September 2010

With the open source nature of Android, there are sorts of various development projects for the OS. One of those is bringing the platform to Nokia handsets. The project is called NITDroid, and they've released a stable version of Android 2.2 for the Nokia n900.

The phone comes with Nokia Maemo standardly, but with the hack users can enjoy Android as an option. Users can receive calls and data on their phone much like other Android users. The only caveat is the software doesn't have camera functionality.

As with all hacks, there have been bugs and function related quirks.

As with all news of the type, Nokia n95.net is not suggesting you use this hack, we're simply reporting what is out there. :)

Symbian might still be leading in software market share, however it's losing ground. While Linux has been enjoying improvements to its market share this past year.

Smartphones have been making a huge push lately, and according to a new study one in five phones sold in the US are smartphones.

Nokia Supports Flash in the Bitter Apple Rivalry
User Rating: / 0
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 02 June 2010

There is a heated battle going on between Apple and Flash. Apple, particularly Steve Jobs, has called out Flash for being less than optimal when it comes to the mobile internet. He's called the platform a battery hog, and accused Flash of being unreliable.

In retaliation Adobe claimed that Apple has been a dictator towards developers over what can be developed for the app store. Adobe even went so far as to take out ads in numerous newspapers to complain about Apple's no-Flash policy.

Other companies have piped up in regards to the feud, each taking sides in the debate. Opera co-founder, Jon von Tetzchner had this to say, "Flash is the only proprietary part of the Web we support"

Those sentiments were followed up by Alberto Torres, the head of Nokia's business solutions unit, "We support Flash as well"

Wednesday, 07 April 2010

Hot on the heels of the Apple iPad release, rumors are already circulating of competition in the works. One such rumor has Nokia working on a competing product. Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, who has close ties to Nokia tech partners unleashed the news recently .

"Nokia hasn't fielded any breakaway products in years" he continues, "This is a new window, and Nokia had better be at the starting gate if and when the product category takes off"

Kumar also claims that Nokia is working with suppliers and manufacturers to have their product released sometime later this year. Nokia isn't a stranger to the tablet industry, as they've tried to release products in the past. With the heightened sense of awareness in consumers, with interface changes Nokia might have success with their plans this time.

Nokia Faces Potential Lawsuit From Apple
User Rating: / 0
Written by Administrator
Tuesday, 15 December 2009

Nokia if you remember filed a lawsuit against Apple earlier in the year, asserting that the iPhone developers had infringed upon Nokia's patents. Instead of simply fighting the lawsuit, Apple has issued a counter-suit of their own claiming Nokia has copied them. Now all interested parties get to watch a multi-million dollar game of he said/she said.

Originally, Nokia filed their suit against Apple for infringing upon their GSM/UMTS patents trying to get Apple to cough up royalties. The patents Nokia referred to involved 2G and 3G connections, also WiFi integration for cell phones. The suit was filed in October when Apple refused to agree to Nokia's licensing terms. Apple deemed the terms unreasonable, which led to the company developing technology of their own.

Instead of just playing defense, Apple has struck back claiming Nokia has infringed on their patents, "Nokia has demonstrated its willingness to copy Apple's iPhone ideas as well as Apple's basic computing technologies, all while demanding Apple pay for access to Nokia's purported standards essential patent"

Nokia Suffers First Quarterly Loss In Ten Years
User Rating: / 0
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 21 October 2009

Nokia has always enjoyed strong handset sells. There has always been competition, but Nokia has pulled through and sold well. With the current state of the economy, and the fierce competition of other smartphones Nokia has posted their first quarterly loss in a decade.

The phone developer has gone on record that their market share has dropped from 35 percent to 41 percent since the last quarter. Olli Pekka, a Nokia exec explains the numbers,

"Our volumes and net sales were, however, somewhat constrained by component shortages we encountered across the portfolio"

It's a shock to see Nokia posting negative numbers. They're hoping that in the fourth quarter, they'll be able to bounce back. They have a netbook, and brand new handsets rolling out. They integrate better with social networking, so time will tell if they can rebound.

Microsoft and Nokia Come Together On Mobile Office Deal
User Rating: / 8
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 19 August 2009

Microsoft has announced that a deal has been reached with Nokia, that would allow the titan software manufacturer to create a version of Microsoft Office to work on Nokia's devices.

The launch of this version of Microsoft Office will be dropping next year. It is planned to coincide with another version of office that allows users to access Word, and other programs by online means.

This isn't Microsoft's first foray into the mobile industry mind you, as they've created Office by way of their Mobile Operating System. Also, Blackberries have had the  ability to run Office through the work of a company called DataViz.

One surprising element to this story is that Microsoft and Nokia have had a pretty rocky past. They've been at odds before, and were once considered rivals. Undoubtedly, with the emergance of other companies and their foothold in the mobile industry, led to this pairing.

Nokia Cutting Jobs Because Of Economy
User Rating: / 0

Wednesday, 18 March 2009

It seems to be the tagline for most news you hear these days, 'jobs cut because of economy'. Nokia isn't immune to the phrase, as they're slicing their workforce by 1,700 workers. Nokia is making its move due to lower sells, and price tags.

The job losses will affect many of the companies' sectors. From many of its global divisions, all the way to its corporate offices. Nokia warned of making cuts back in January when it was reported that their fourth-quarter net profit crashed 69 percent.

One of Nokia's major research centers will be closing. They've stated they will provide many employees a resignation program, in hopes of putting off having to give people the ax.

Ngage v2 is out NOW!
User Rating: / 3
Written by Administrator
Friday, 04 April 2008

N Gage available to download! This one slipped under my radar today - but better late than never... Nokia have un-officially launched N-Gage and this time it's for real!

No more limited trials on limited handsets - this is the real deal. You can download the application here http://www.n-gage.com/ngi/ngage/web/no/en/get_ngage/download.html

But be warned - there are some teething problems:

  • The N-Gage site is very slow at the moment and user's are reporting errors in creating new account's or logging in with existing accounts.
  • Access points - the system seems to choose weird access points for your handset, you can change the defaults to your required access points but you must EXIT N-GAGE AND THEN RE-START THE APPLICATION for the changes to take effect.
  • System crashes - some N95 user's have reported system freezing / crashing after installing the N-Gage application - if this happens to you then reboot your handset and it should fix it.
