We all know that technology moves on - what is "flagship" today is ancient tomorrow and Nokia are by no means ammune to this constant technological race... So it had to happen one day, and happen it has. Nokia have announced the new 2008 "flagship" model - the replacement for the N95 if you like... The N96!

N96 - the replacement for the N95

The specs on this new model - due out around the 3rd quarter of 2008 are very very impressive for a mobile device, but it seems that Nokia still have not learnt by some of the basic N95 flaws.

Firstly the N96 has the same dual-slider form factor as the N95 - which is a good thing as it works! But it has a very similar QVGA screen and it has the same p*ss poor battery as the N95!!!!! - COME ON NOKIA, GET A GRIP!

Let's takea closer look at the specs:

  • 2.8" QVGA Display.
  • 16Gb of internal memory - YES 16GB!!!!!
  • MicroSD card slot to add even more memory! (up to 8Gb more at current standards).
  • Hi-Speed USB (transfer a full movie in under 2 minutes I am told).
  • 5-Megapixel Camera with Zeiss optics.
  • Dual LED flash (sorry no Xenon flash).
  • Support for Mobile TV.
  • "Kickstand" to stand the N96 on your table / desk.
  • A-GPS with Nokia Maps v2.0
  • Geo-tagging images as standard.

The list goes on and on but what is interesting is the massive memory of this device - with Sandisk announcing this week that they are working on a 16Gb MicroSD card - you could in theory have 32Gb of storage for your music and video!

I have got some pictures of the N96 up - click here for more N96 images.

Is there any info about the specs like:

instead of the n95's sirf II chipset a sirf III chipset.

Should you open the slide for the intergraded gps.
Pretty sad they didnt improve the battery problem.

I use a DC-8 powerpack of nokia to recharge my n95 during school lessons. Otherwise the battery is empty afhter a half day. 1 AA battery has enough energy to recharge a n95.
