Nokia is going to be dropping their Symbian OS for Linux, in their upcoming N-Series smartphones. Nokia is hoping the partnership will help then compete with both Apple and Google.

The N8 will be the last phone in the N-series to feature the Symbian mobile OS. From now on, N-Series phones will utilize MeeGo.

Symbian might still be leading in software market share, however it's losing ground. While Linux has been enjoying improvements to its market share this past year.

Smartphones have been making a huge push lately, and according to a new study one in five phones sold in the US are smartphones.
