How to change your N95's product code

There are many reasons why you would want to change your N95's current product code - the main one is to get the latest firmware updates.

To understand why we need to change the product code, we first need to understand how firmware versions work and how the networks handle them...

Firstly Nokia will release a new phone or a new software (firmware) release to the general public - this is known as "un-branded" or "generic", the networks (in the Uk Orange, T-Mobile, O2 etc) on the other hand like to "brand" their handsets to their liking - this usually means stripping out certain features they don't like, adding certain cosmetic changes (the web 'n walk logo instead of the internet logo on T-Mobile handsets for example) or adding custom software.... these phones are now "branded" and have their own unique product code - this tells your local Nokia service center what version firmware to install should the phone break or need repair.

Now... When a new update becomes available - Nokia will firstly release it in it's natural and un-tampered with state for un-branded phones - the networks will have to test this new software and then mess about with it like they did with the original software before it becomes available to it's customers...

So when you plug a branded phone into your PC and run the Nokia Software Updater (NSU) it cannot find a new software version even if you know that Nokia have released one... Because you have not got the correct product code in your phone to tell the NSU software to download the update Frown

So how can we fix this? Well read on and I will tell all.....

Firstly I need to point out that following the below procedure WILL invalidate both your network warranty and your Nokia warranty - you have been warned!

You will need 2 pieces of software for the product code change and upgrade - the are NSU (Nokia Software Updater) which is a Nokia approved product availble from the Nokia website http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4226014 You will also need Nemesis Service Suite (NSS) available to download here http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/software.htm

Once you have these 2 pieces of software installed on your PC we can begin...

WARNING: If you do not follow these instructions to the letter then you could seriously damage your phone, I take NO responsibility for anyone who "bricks" their phone doing this...!

  • BACKUP YOUR PHONE - The software update will erase everything your your phones memory so you need to back all your pictures, movies, sounds, music etc to your PC. You also need to backup your contacts to your memory card or to your PC.
  • Plug your phone into your PC (if you haven't already done so) and also plug it into your charger.
  • I would also advise at this point to disable your PC's screensaver and also set your N95 to the "general" profile.
  • Now launch NSS - you will see on the right of the screen that there is a section for the product code along with the buttons "read" and "write" - you need to click the "read" button in order to get your current product code.
  • Write this code down in case you want to return your product code to the original after the update.
  • Now we need to delete that product code and give your phone it's new "generic" product code... You simple erase the code on the NSS screen and input the new one into the field. Here are the current known N95 product codes:

0534841 EURO1 - Sand
0534842 FRANCE
0534843 ALPS
0534844 EURO2
0534845 TURKEY
0534847 SCANDINAVIA
0534848 BALTIAN
0534849 RUSSIAN
0534850 UKRAINE
0534851 CIS, Bulgaria
0534852 EURO3
0534853 BALKANS
0534854 GREECE, CYPROS
0534857 ISRAEL
0536058 BELARUS/MOLDOVA
0534833 SINGAPORE

0536062 EURO1 - Plum
0536063 FRANCE
0536064 ALPS
0536065 EURO2
0536066 TURKEY
0536068 SCANDINAVIA
0536069 BALTIAN
0536070 RUSSIAN
0536071 UKRAINE
0536072 CIS, Bulgaria
0536073 BELARUS/MOLDOVA
0536074 EURO3
0536075 BALKANS
0536076 GREECE, CYPROS
0536079 ISRAEL

You need to pick the EURO1 product code (if you are in the UK - if not then please pick the product code that matches your country / region) and also make sure that you have the correct colour (don't ask me why!).

  • Type the new code into the field in NSS and click "write" - job done!
  • Now you just need to close NSS and open NSU (Nokia Software Updater) and follow the instructions - if you have changed code correctly then you will see your current firmware version AND a new higher firmware version available to download... Once you have started the download process DO NOT disconnect your phone / use your PC or do anything else that might interupt it!
  • Once you have finished updating you can then go about putting all your settings back to how you like them and putting your tunes back on the phone!

There has been some discussion over whether you should put your product code BACK to your original after the update - I don't think it will do any harm but you need to be aware that if you run NSU in the future you may well find yourself in trouble... You must use the generic product code for all future firmware updates!

It is also very unlikely that your local Nokia Service Center will notice or actually care what you have done... But they just might, so be aware!

I would also advise AGAINST restoring backups of the phone pre-update... A lot of people have restored backups no problems but some have reported problems with an unstable phone afterwards (possible software version conflicts).

Happy upgrading!

Boo hoo!
I followed your instructions word by word to upgrade my Nokia N95 firmware to V12.0.013, the phone booted up, I re-installed my backed up files and now my phone fails to start up - I get the message "Phone start up failed. Contact the retailer."
Any help or advice please, because the phone won't start up, I cannot connect to my PC with USB!

Thanks for this tip.

During my lunch break I ran Nokia's update service to be told 'no update available' , followed these instructions and changed the code from 0548021, ran the update again . Bingo ! Worked a treat.

Use NSS to "read" your current product code - normally unbranded phones wshould just update without having to change the product code? :?
