The Nokia n900 is the flagship phone for mobile phone company we all know. The handset is being alluded to as a mobile computer. However, it's been stymied by the fact that there have been no compatible apps released for it. This all changes today, as The Ovi Store is launching for the n900. The phone uses the Maemo-Linux platform, which up until now didn't use Ovi. Many experts are optimistic that this could open up the n900 to a broader audience, because up until now Linux experience was required for full use. Nokia if you remember filed a lawsuit against Apple earlier in the year, asserting that the iPhone developers had infringed upon Nokia's patents. Instead of simply fighting the lawsuit, Apple has issued a counter-suit of their own claiming Nokia has copied them. Now all interested parties get to watch a multi-million dollar game of he said/she said. Originally, Nokia filed their suit against Apple for infringing upon their GSM/UMTS patents trying to get Apple to cough up royalties. The patents Nokia referred to involved 2G and 3G connections, also WiFi integration for cell phones. The suit was filed in October when Apple refused to agree to Nokia's licensing terms. Apple deemed the terms unreasonable, which led to the company developing technology of their own. Instead of just playing defense, Apple has struck back claiming Nokia has infringed on their patents, "Nokia has demonstrated its willingness to copy Apple's iPhone ideas as well as Apple's basic computing technologies, all while demanding Apple pay for access to Nokia's purported standards essential patent" Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (2) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 467 |

The creator of the Pre and Pixi models, Palm, has been rumored to be a gleam in the eye of Nokia. It is being reported that Nokia is interested in Palm due to the company's roster of smartphones throughout the years. An acquisition of this nature could go a long way in taking it to the competition, Apple and Blackberry. Palm's shares shot up 8% today in light of these rumors which gives them a bit more validity. For a good portion of this year, there have been talks of someone buying out Palm but as of yet nothing has solidified. The latest rumor comes off the lawsuit that Nokia is taking Apple over patent infringements. This could be just a coincidence, or a sign of Nokia trying to make a bold statement. As of now, Motorola, Dell, and Microsoft have all been rumored to be interested in purchasing Palm. Nokia has always enjoyed strong handset sells. There has always been competition, but Nokia has pulled through and sold well. With the current state of the economy, and the fierce competition of other smartphones Nokia has posted their first quarterly loss in a decade. The phone developer has gone on record that their market share has dropped from 35 percent to 41 percent since the last quarter. Olli Pekka, a Nokia exec explains the numbers, "Our volumes and net sales were, however, somewhat constrained by component shortages we encountered across the portfolio" It's a shock to see Nokia posting negative numbers. They're hoping that in the fourth quarter, they'll be able to bounce back. They have a netbook, and brand new handsets rolling out. They integrate better with social networking, so time will tell if they can rebound. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (4) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 350 |

Microsoft has announced that a deal has been reached with Nokia, that would allow the titan software manufacturer to create a version of Microsoft Office to work on Nokia's devices. The launch of this version of Microsoft Office will be dropping next year. It is planned to coincide with another version of office that allows users to access Word, and other programs by online means. This isn't Microsoft's first foray into the mobile industry mind you, as they've created Office by way of their Mobile Operating System. Also, Blackberries have had the ability to run Office through the work of a company called DataViz. One surprising element to this story is that Microsoft and Nokia have had a pretty rocky past. They've been at odds before, and were once considered rivals. Undoubtedly, with the emergance of other companies and their foothold in the mobile industry, led to this pairing. One brand of smartphones just got smarter. But it might be a while before it rises to the head of its class. That’s because Nokia’s opening of its brand new application store, the Ovi Store, is not the first of its kind. Blackberry and Microsoft also opened application stores for their smartphones earlier this year, and Android’s apps hit the market in late 2008. Still, most popular of all is Apple’s app store, soaring past one billion downloads.
But Ovi’s 2am (EST) opening time didn’t come off without issues. The Ovi Store publicly apologized to its users via their blog, citing heavy traffic as the source of the problems. Their apology receive mixed reactions from users, but a lot of users are definitely excited about the new applications available for their phones. Nokia launched the Ovi Store with availability in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Singapore, Spain, the US, and the UK, with promises that they will be adding other countries in the future. While Nokia’s offering of operator billing will put it ahead of other app store competitors, operator billing will not be available until the latter half of this year. No worries, though, as US users will be able to make purchases via credit card—just like all the other app stores. So, what apps are recommended for Nokia users? With over 20,000 apps to choose from on opening day, the possibilities are endless. According to Eric John, who heads up product marketing for Ovi, some must-have apps include Gravity (a Twitter manager), Trapster (basically a non-radar radar detector), AP News, WorldMate (a traveler’s all-in-one help), Fodors, and EarthComber (an enhanced GPS guide for North America). Obviously, Nokia is making use of their GPS enabled phones, which is a feature included in most of their newer models. All told, it might have been helpful for the Ovi Store to do a little more testing before the official launch. But it won’t be enough to close down shop. Besides, the Ovi shopping experience might be a little easier in the coming months on new Nokia phones. Nokia plans to preload the Ovi Store on upcoming models. What's cooler than Nokia's 5800 touch screen phone. The same phone, with some limited edition Star Trek awesomeness to go along with it. Nokia has announced a special edition of their 5800 touch screen handset, that will feature Star Trek specific extras. There will be exclusive multimedia pre-loaded onto the phone, along with a phaser app. The multimedia package includes, wallpapers, screensavers, and eight ringtones you can only find on the Star Trek edition of the 5800. On top of the special edition features, you can expect 8 GB of internal memory, 3.2 megapixel camera, and built-in surround sound speakers. It makes you wonder when the next movie inspired handset will be coming our way. We've already seen a limited edition James Bond, The Dark Knight, and now Star Trek. It seems to be the tagline for most news you hear these days, 'jobs cut because of economy'. Nokia isn't immune to the phrase, as they're slicing their workforce by 1,700 workers. Nokia is making its move due to lower sells, and price tags. The job losses will affect many of the companies' sectors. From many of its global divisions, all the way to its corporate offices. Nokia warned of making cuts back in January when it was reported that their fourth-quarter net profit crashed 69 percent. One of Nokia's major research centers will be closing. They've stated they will provide many employees a resignation program, in hopes of putting off having to give people the ax. Living in one of the more technological advanced countries in the world, we get pampered on new, and emerging technologies. Generally, the more advanced handsets cost a great amount of money as well, so not everyone can afford to get in on the action. The Nokia 5030 is a newly released phone, for markets who are on a budget or really like FM radios. It might not have a touch screen, or have built-in GPS, but the Nokia 5030 does have some features that will attract users. If you like listening to the radio, the 5030 comes with a built-in FM antenna. There's also loudspeakers so you can listen without plugging in earphones. The phone will cost $50 with an upgrade, or two year contract. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (7) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 809 |

As the economy takes its toll, everyone is feeling the effects. Nokia, is no exception as they're reporting some heavy losses to profit during the fourth quarter of 2008. Net Profit was down $2.39 billion, from Nokia's profit in 2007. Actual sales plummeted from $20.5 billion, to $16.4 billion. Nokia commented on the bleak numbers, in typical fashion, "We are taking action to reduce overall costs and to preserve our strong capital structure. This is clearly our top priority in the current economic environment...In recent weeks, the macroeconomic environment has deteriorated rapidly, with even weaker consumer confidence, unprecedented currency volatility and credit tightness continuing to impact the mobile communications industry." If you read between the fine print, this could definitely mean layoffs for Nokia. It doesn't necessarily mean that they'll be giving layoffs or giving them exclusively. Actually, Nokia promises to reduce production costs of handsets dramatically to ease the economic burden. Here's hoping that the production costs are enough to keep all of the Nokia workers employed Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (10) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 744 |
