With the open source nature of Android, there are sorts of various development projects for the OS. One of those is bringing the platform to Nokia handsets. The project is called NITDroid, and they've released a stable version of Android 2.2 for the Nokia n900. The phone comes with Nokia Maemo standardly, but with the hack users can enjoy Android as an option. Users can receive calls and data on their phone much like other Android users. The only caveat is the software doesn't have camera functionality. As with all hacks, there have been bugs and function related quirks. As with all news of the type, Nokia n95.net is not suggesting you use this hack, we're simply reporting what is out there. :) Source: mobiledia Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 108 |

Time to fill out resumes, and call up connections with Nokia, as they will soon be looking for a new CEO. It is being reported that Nokia has started a search for a new CEO. The recent trailing to other smartphones, has put Nokia in a very difficult position. It is being speculated that the current CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo could be booted as early as the end of August. Google/Android phones, and iPhones have been making massive pushes in the wireless market. Nokia has been slow to response to these pushes. They stalled the release of Symbian 3 earlier in the year. Then just recently, they announced a switch in OS from Symbian to Linux. Upon these proceedings, many key exects and other management positions were reshuffled. Now, it looks like it will be happening with the biggest piece of all. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (1) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 85 |

Nokia is going to be dropping their Symbian OS for Linux, in their upcoming N-Series smartphones. Nokia is hoping the partnership will help then compete with both Apple and Google. The N8 will be the last phone in the N-series to feature the Symbian mobile OS. From now on, N-Series phones will utilize MeeGo. Symbian might still be leading in software market share, however it's losing ground. While Linux has been enjoying improvements to its market share this past year. Smartphones have been making a huge push lately, and according to a new study one in five phones sold in the US are smartphones. http://www.mobiledia.com/news/71974.html Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 360 |

There is a heated battle going on between Apple and Flash. Apple, particularly Steve Jobs, has called out Flash for being less than optimal when it comes to the mobile internet. He's called the platform a battery hog, and accused Flash of being unreliable. In retaliation Adobe claimed that Apple has been a dictator towards developers over what can be developed for the app store. Adobe even went so far as to take out ads in numerous newspapers to complain about Apple's no-Flash policy. Other companies have piped up in regards to the feud, each taking sides in the debate. Opera co-founder, Jon von Tetzchner had this to say, "Flash is the only proprietary part of the Web we support" Those sentiments were followed up by Alberto Torres, the head of Nokia's business solutions unit, "We support Flash as well" Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (1) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 396 |

Hot on the heels of the Apple iPad release, rumors are already circulating of competition in the works. One such rumor has Nokia working on a competing product. Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, who has close ties to Nokia tech partners unleashed the news recently .
"Nokia hasn't fielded any breakaway products in years" he continues, "This is a new window, and Nokia had better be at the starting gate if and when the product category takes off" Kumar also claims that Nokia is working with suppliers and manufacturers to have their product released sometime later this year. Nokia isn't a stranger to the tablet industry, as they've tried to release products in the past. With the heightened sense of awareness in consumers, with interface changes Nokia might have success with their plans this time. As phones grow in both scope, and features battery life will continually be drained. Having amazing features on a phone is great, but it doesn't do you much good if the battery only lasts 4 hours. Nokia has devised an interesting, and sci-fi sounding solution to the problem - Piezoelectric Kinetic Energy Harvester. That isn't fake, it's the name of Nokia's latest patent. With such a complicated name, the technology behind it is rather simple. The idea of the technology can be summed up in one word, 'crystals'. Electricity is generated from the movement of crystals which then is used to charge a batter. Simple movements will be enough to generate enough electricity to help extend battery life. It hasn't been reported how much electricity will be generated, so we have more information to stay tuned in for. The Nokia n900 is the flagship phone for mobile phone company we all know. The handset is being alluded to as a mobile computer. However, it's been stymied by the fact that there have been no compatible apps released for it. This all changes today, as The Ovi Store is launching for the n900. The phone uses the Maemo-Linux platform, which up until now didn't use Ovi. Many experts are optimistic that this could open up the n900 to a broader audience, because up until now Linux experience was required for full use. Nokia if you remember filed a lawsuit against Apple earlier in the year, asserting that the iPhone developers had infringed upon Nokia's patents. Instead of simply fighting the lawsuit, Apple has issued a counter-suit of their own claiming Nokia has copied them. Now all interested parties get to watch a multi-million dollar game of he said/she said. Originally, Nokia filed their suit against Apple for infringing upon their GSM/UMTS patents trying to get Apple to cough up royalties. The patents Nokia referred to involved 2G and 3G connections, also WiFi integration for cell phones. The suit was filed in October when Apple refused to agree to Nokia's licensing terms. Apple deemed the terms unreasonable, which led to the company developing technology of their own. Instead of just playing defense, Apple has struck back claiming Nokia has infringed on their patents, "Nokia has demonstrated its willingness to copy Apple's iPhone ideas as well as Apple's basic computing technologies, all while demanding Apple pay for access to Nokia's purported standards essential patent" Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (7) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 849 |

The creator of the Pre and Pixi models, Palm, has been rumored to be a gleam in the eye of Nokia. It is being reported that Nokia is interested in Palm due to the company's roster of smartphones throughout the years. An acquisition of this nature could go a long way in taking it to the competition, Apple and Blackberry. Palm's shares shot up 8% today in light of these rumors which gives them a bit more validity. For a good portion of this year, there have been talks of someone buying out Palm but as of yet nothing has solidified. The latest rumor comes off the lawsuit that Nokia is taking Apple over patent infringements. This could be just a coincidence, or a sign of Nokia trying to make a bold statement. As of now, Motorola, Dell, and Microsoft have all been rumored to be interested in purchasing Palm. Nokia has always enjoyed strong handset sells. There has always been competition, but Nokia has pulled through and sold well. With the current state of the economy, and the fierce competition of other smartphones Nokia has posted their first quarterly loss in a decade. The phone developer has gone on record that their market share has dropped from 35 percent to 41 percent since the last quarter. Olli Pekka, a Nokia exec explains the numbers, "Our volumes and net sales were, however, somewhat constrained by component shortages we encountered across the portfolio" It's a shock to see Nokia posting negative numbers. They're hoping that in the fourth quarter, they'll be able to bounce back. They have a netbook, and brand new handsets rolling out. They integrate better with social networking, so time will tell if they can rebound. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (9) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 592 |

Microsoft has announced that a deal has been reached with Nokia, that would allow the titan software manufacturer to create a version of Microsoft Office to work on Nokia's devices. The launch of this version of Microsoft Office will be dropping next year. It is planned to coincide with another version of office that allows users to access Word, and other programs by online means. This isn't Microsoft's first foray into the mobile industry mind you, as they've created Office by way of their Mobile Operating System. Also, Blackberries have had the ability to run Office through the work of a company called DataViz. One surprising element to this story is that Microsoft and Nokia have had a pretty rocky past. They've been at odds before, and were once considered rivals. Undoubtedly, with the emergance of other companies and their foothold in the mobile industry, led to this pairing. One brand of smartphones just got smarter. But it might be a while before it rises to the head of its class. That’s because Nokia’s opening of its brand new application store, the Ovi Store, is not the first of its kind. Blackberry and Microsoft also opened application stores for their smartphones earlier this year, and Android’s apps hit the market in late 2008. Still, most popular of all is Apple’s app store, soaring past one billion downloads.
But Ovi’s 2am (EST) opening time didn’t come off without issues. The Ovi Store publicly apologized to its users via their blog, citing heavy traffic as the source of the problems. Their apology receive mixed reactions from users, but a lot of users are definitely excited about the new applications available for their phones. Nokia launched the Ovi Store with availability in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Singapore, Spain, the US, and the UK, with promises that they will be adding other countries in the future. While Nokia’s offering of operator billing will put it ahead of other app store competitors, operator billing will not be available until the latter half of this year. No worries, though, as US users will be able to make purchases via credit card—just like all the other app stores. So, what apps are recommended for Nokia users? With over 20,000 apps to choose from on opening day, the possibilities are endless. According to Eric John, who heads up product marketing for Ovi, some must-have apps include Gravity (a Twitter manager), Trapster (basically a non-radar radar detector), AP News, WorldMate (a traveler’s all-in-one help), Fodors, and EarthComber (an enhanced GPS guide for North America). Obviously, Nokia is making use of their GPS enabled phones, which is a feature included in most of their newer models. All told, it might have been helpful for the Ovi Store to do a little more testing before the official launch. But it won’t be enough to close down shop. Besides, the Ovi shopping experience might be a little easier in the coming months on new Nokia phones. Nokia plans to preload the Ovi Store on upcoming models. What's cooler than Nokia's 5800 touch screen phone. The same phone, with some limited edition Star Trek awesomeness to go along with it. There will be exclusive multimedia pre-loaded onto the phone, along with a phaser app. The multimedia package includes, wallpapers, screensavers, and eight ringtones you can only find on the Star Trek edition of the 5800. On top of the special edition features, you can expect 8 GB of internal memory, 3.2 megapixel camera, and built-in surround sound speakers.
