The Microsoft/Nokia Partnership Is Still Happening
User Rating: / 22
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 06 April 2011

The talks of a Microsoft and Nokia partnership have been happening since February. Since the announcement, little has been mentioned of the team up. That is until now . Apparently, Nokia is ready to release a line of Windows-powered handsets which could change the fortune of both companies.

Both companies are down on their lunk in the mobile world. Microsoft has tried for years to successfully become involved in the cellular market. Nokia, once was a giant in the US and was unmatched in cell phone sales. Then with the release of  the iPhone and Android power devices,  Nokia's market share began to dip. They still lead in global sales, but their numbers have significantly dropped.

This alliance could be just what both companies need, and with Nokia's large base and Microsoft's experience creating OS's, there's a high chance of success.

Nokia E7 Gets Delayed

Wednesday, 22 December 2010

If you've been excited about the release for the Nokia E7, you're going to have to continue to be patient. It has been announced that the Nokia E7's launch has been pushed back to early next year. The reason for the delay is the Symbian developers have missed another deadline for getting the software released.

Carol Soriano, a Nokia spokeswoman, said this of the delay, "We just wanted to make sure it's the best product possible in both hardware and software"

The Symbian 3 software has had problems in keeping up with features that the iPhone and Android phones enjoy. Therefore, developers have been working continuosly to bring features in that can compete with these other OS's.

Nokia Bringing Symbian Back In House
User Rating: / 1

Tuesday, 23 November 2010

A lot can change in two years. This is the lesson Nokia is learning, as they've decided to take their operating system, Symbian, off the open source status. Back in 2008, Nokia decided to open up Symbian and allow developers to tinker with it. This was before the iPhone, or Google Android really made it big.

Handset manufacturers have been dropping Symbian in favor of other OS's, so they decided it was time for a change.

Tim Holbrow, executive director of the Symbian Foundation, had this to say, "There has since been a seismic change in the mobile market but also more generally in the economy, which has led to a change in focus for some of our funding board members"

"The result of this is that the current governance structure for the Symbian platform -- the foundation -- is no longer appropriate."

While Symbian has taken a hit in market share, it still leads overall at 37%.

Don't Count Nokia Out Yet

Wednesday, 27 October 2010

During the period of July-September, Nokia posted a profit of $733 million. This is in stark contrast to the reports of how Nokia was going to continue losing money, to the new up and coming cell phone makers. Sales are reported to have increased by 5 percent, with a swelling in China, and both North/South America.

Though it's good news of posting profit, Nokia announced they will be cutting 1,800 jobs as they're still coming back from losses earlier in the year.

Stephen Elop, Nokia's new CEO said this about the report, "We must reassess our role in and our approach to this industry"

"We will make both the strategic and operational improvements necessary to ensure that we continue to delight our customers and deliver superior financial results to our shareholders."

Legal Dispute Between Nokia and Apple Extends To The UK
User Rating: / 0
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 29 September 2010

There has been a relatively long running legal battle between the phone makers Apple, and Nokia. It all started back in 2007 when Nokia was wanting royalties from iPhone sales. Since, there has been litigation going back and forth betweent he smartphone companies. The latest comes from the UK, where Apple claims that Nokia is ingringing upon their patents.

Mark Durrant, a Nokia spokesman had this to say, "This is an unsurprising development, which seems designed to put pressure on the ongoing dialogue between both companies"

"It changes nothing in the fundamentals of the matter, which are rooted in Apple's refusal to respect Nokia's intellectual property and attempt to free-ride on the back of Nokia's innovation."

If anyone is keeping tally of the wins and losses between the two companies, this dispute is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Wednesday, 01 September 2010

With the open source nature of Android, there are sorts of various development projects for the OS. One of those is bringing the platform to Nokia handsets. The project is called NITDroid, and they've released a stable version of Android 2.2 for the Nokia n900.

The phone comes with Nokia Maemo standardly, but with the hack users can enjoy Android as an option. Users can receive calls and data on their phone much like other Android users. The only caveat is the software doesn't have camera functionality.

As with all hacks, there have been bugs and function related quirks.

As with all news of the type, Nokia n95.net is not suggesting you use this hack, we're simply reporting what is out there. :)

Wednesday, 04 August 2010

Time to fill out resumes, and call up connections with Nokia, as they will soon be looking for a new CEO.  It is being reported that Nokia has started a search for a new CEO. The recent trailing to other smartphones, has put Nokia in a very difficult position. It is being speculated that the current CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo could be booted as early as the end of August.

Google/Android phones, and iPhones have been making massive pushes in the wireless market.  Nokia has been slow to response to these pushes. They stalled the release of Symbian 3 earlier in the year. Then just recently, they announced a switch in OS from Symbian to Linux. Upon these proceedings, many key exects and other management positions were reshuffled. Now, it looks like it will be happening with the biggest piece of all.

Wednesday, 07 July 2010

Nokia is going to be dropping their Symbian OS for Linux, in their upcoming N-Series smartphones. Nokia is hoping the partnership will help then compete with both Apple and Google.

The N8 will be the last phone in the N-series to feature the Symbian mobile OS. From now on, N-Series phones will utilize MeeGo.

Symbian might still be leading in software market share, however it's losing ground. While Linux has been enjoying improvements to its market share this past year.

Smartphones have been making a huge push lately, and according to a new study one in five phones sold in the US are smartphones.

Nokia Supports Flash in the Bitter Apple Rivalry
User Rating: / 1

Wednesday, 02 June 2010

There is a heated battle going on between Apple and Flash. Apple, particularly Steve Jobs, has called out Flash for being less than optimal when it comes to the mobile internet. He's called the platform a battery hog, and accused Flash of being unreliable.

In retaliation Adobe claimed that Apple has been a dictator towards developers over what can be developed for the app store. Adobe even went so far as to take out ads in numerous newspapers to complain about Apple's no-Flash policy.

Other companies have piped up in regards to the feud, each taking sides in the debate. Opera co-founder, Jon von Tetzchner had this to say, "Flash is the only proprietary part of the Web we support"

Those sentiments were followed up by Alberto Torres, the head of Nokia's business solutions unit, "We support Flash as well"

Wednesday, 07 April 2010

Hot on the heels of the Apple iPad release, rumors are already circulating of competition in the works. One such rumor has Nokia working on a competing product. Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, who has close ties to Nokia tech partners unleashed the news recently .

"Nokia hasn't fielded any breakaway products in years" he continues, "This is a new window, and Nokia had better be at the starting gate if and when the product category takes off"

Kumar also claims that Nokia is working with suppliers and manufacturers to have their product released sometime later this year. Nokia isn't a stranger to the tablet industry, as they've tried to release products in the past. With the heightened sense of awareness in consumers, with interface changes Nokia might have success with their plans this time.

Nokia Patents Interesting Idea For Extending Battery Life
User Rating: / 5
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 10 March 2010

As phones grow in both scope, and features battery life will continually be drained. Having amazing features on a phone is great, but it doesn't do you much good if the battery only lasts 4 hours.

Nokia has devised an interesting, and sci-fi sounding solution to the problem - Piezoelectric Kinetic Energy Harvester. That isn't fake, it's the name of Nokia's latest patent. With such a complicated name, the technology behind it is rather simple.

The idea of the technology can be summed up in one word, 'crystals'. Electricity is generated from the movement of crystals which then is used to charge a batter. Simple movements will be enough to generate enough electricity to help extend battery life. It hasn't been reported how much electricity will be generated, so we have more information to stay tuned in for.

Wednesday, 13 January 2010

The Nokia n900 is the flagship phone for mobile phone company we all know. The handset is being alluded to as a mobile computer. However, it's been stymied by the fact that there have been no compatible apps released for it. This all changes today, as The Ovi Store is launching for the n900.

The phone uses the Maemo-Linux platform, which up until now didn't use Ovi.  Many experts are optimistic that this could open up the n900 to a broader audience, because up until now Linux experience was required for full use.

Nokia Faces Potential Lawsuit From Apple
User Rating: / 0
Written by Administrator
Tuesday, 15 December 2009

Nokia if you remember filed a lawsuit against Apple earlier in the year, asserting that the iPhone developers had infringed upon Nokia's patents. Instead of simply fighting the lawsuit, Apple has issued a counter-suit of their own claiming Nokia has copied them. Now all interested parties get to watch a multi-million dollar game of he said/she said.

Originally, Nokia filed their suit against Apple for infringing upon their GSM/UMTS patents trying to get Apple to cough up royalties. The patents Nokia referred to involved 2G and 3G connections, also WiFi integration for cell phones. The suit was filed in October when Apple refused to agree to Nokia's licensing terms. Apple deemed the terms unreasonable, which led to the company developing technology of their own.

Instead of just playing defense, Apple has struck back claiming Nokia has infringed on their patents, "Nokia has demonstrated its willingness to copy Apple's iPhone ideas as well as Apple's basic computing technologies, all while demanding Apple pay for access to Nokia's purported standards essential patent"

Rumors Surge of a Palm Takeover From Nokia
User Rating: / 0

Monday, 16 November 2009

The creator of the Pre and Pixi models, Palm, has been rumored to be a gleam in the eye of Nokia. It is being reported that Nokia is interested in Palm due to the company's roster of smartphones throughout the years. An acquisition of this nature could go a long way in taking it to the competition, Apple and Blackberry.

Palm's shares shot up 8% today in light of these rumors which gives them a bit more validity. For a good portion of this year, there have been talks of someone buying out Palm but as of yet nothing has solidified.

The latest rumor comes off the lawsuit that Nokia is taking Apple over patent infringements. This could be just a coincidence, or a sign of Nokia trying to make a bold statement.

As of now, Motorola, Dell, and Microsoft have all been rumored to be interested in purchasing Palm.

Nokia Suffers First Quarterly Loss In Ten Years
User Rating: / 0

Wednesday, 21 October 2009

Nokia has always enjoyed strong handset sells. There has always been competition, but Nokia has pulled through and sold well. With the current state of the economy, and the fierce competition of other smartphones Nokia has posted their first quarterly loss in a decade.

The phone developer has gone on record that their market share has dropped from 35 percent to 41 percent since the last quarter. Olli Pekka, a Nokia exec explains the numbers,

"Our volumes and net sales were, however, somewhat constrained by component shortages we encountered across the portfolio"

It's a shock to see Nokia posting negative numbers. They're hoping that in the fourth quarter, they'll be able to bounce back. They have a netbook, and brand new handsets rolling out. They integrate better with social networking, so time will tell if they can rebound.
