Today at the Mobile World Congress, Nokia unvailed the new Nokia MAPS application that will come pre-installed on it's future GPS enabled handset's. They announced that the BETA (not final) version would be available from today and true to their word it has been released by Nokia Beta Labs http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/maps

Please note that you should be running the latest (v20) firmware in order to install the update - if you install it on older versions then you may not be able to easily un-install it.

There are currently 2 version's to download - one for handset's that already have a previous version of MAPs installed and one for handset's that do not have a previous version (fresh install).

Now you must bare in mind that this is a BETA version - there will be bugs... so if you rely on your current MAP's application for navigation then you are probably better of waiting for the final release.

Bugs so far include:

  • Traffic info service has a known defect that it is downloading too much data when activated. We recommend you do not purchase or use Traffic info with this Beta release.
  • New map data (upgrade via the new Map Loader) is also still in beta and, for example, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are not drawn correctly.
  • If you are using N95, please make sure you have the latest firmware (20.0.015 or newer).
  • The help texts have not yet been updated from previous Maps version.
  • Localization is not completed in all languages so some menu items might still be in English.

Please note that you should be running the latest (v20) firmware in order to install the update - if you install it on older versions then you may not be able to easily un-install it.

I have currently downloaded the new version and it is installing as I type - I will let you know the low down as soon as I get chance!

I have used the nokia maps version 1.3 with the full navigation packet on my N95 for some month.

For 3 days ago, I downloaded and installed the new BETA !! version 2.0.

The new version layed itselv byside the old version. It costs 1.2 GB (the old western eourope) on my micro card, and that even I HAVE done the delete from MapLoader as prescribed..

I have tryed to make the installation again, - it did not helped, so until now I have not succeded in getting the lost space on the micro card back.

I will contact Nokia trying to resolve the problem. BUT it IS a Beta version........

If somebody have som good advise, I will be very glad.

Kindest regards
Ernst

I've updated this new released & tested it. the good news is better control, faster lock on positions & satellite mode. BAD NEWS:- No Simulation. i.e. now you cannot even plan a route if you don't have that expen$ive navigation subscription.
