Introducing Python for the N95
User Rating: / 27
Written by Administrator
Tuesday, 22 January 2008

Python is now available for S60 phonesWhat is Python? Well it's an open source programming language and it is now available for Symbian devices (such as the N95). Python allows software developers to create applications that can "hook" into the N95's various systems to produce truely seemless integration with the device.

I believe (and I can be corrected on this) that you will need the latest N95 firmware to take advantage of Python.

Before you can install any Python applications onto your phone you need to install Python itself - this is 2 small .sisx files that you should install to your phone's memory. I have packaged the 2 files together into a single .zip file and added them to our downloads section here http://www.nokia-n95.net/download/python-for-s60/pyton-installation-kit-for-the-n95/download.html

Once you have downloaded and installed the 2 files you will need to create a folder on your phone called /python - if you hook up your N95 to your PC you will only be able to create this folder on the memory card.

You are now ready to rock with Python!

I am shortly going to start adding freeware Python applications to our downloads section, the first one is "pyRybka" (which I will add shortly) - it's a useless but fun application that has a fish swimming around on your phone's screen - as you tilt the N95 the water stays level - using the built in accelerometer and if you shake the phone the fish dies and floats to the top of the screen - as I said... Useless but very funny.

To install pyRybka you just install the .sis file and then copy the 2 fish image files to your new /python folder.

16Gb MicroSD cards will fit the N95John over at http://www.telefon-treff.de/ has published pictures of the soon to be released SanDisk 16GB MicroSD cards working in various devices - including the N95.

What is really exciting here is that new Nokia N96 (the N95's replacement) already sports 16Gb of internal memory PLUS a MicroSD card slot... so that's a MASSIVE 32GB of storage in a mobile device!

The new 16GB cards are expected to be released later this year but if you are currently low on storage then you might want to consider the currently available 8GB cards from various places inluding http://www.mobymemory.com/micro-SD.asp

Wireless LAN (WI-FI)
User Rating: / 27
Thursday, 15 February 2007

The N95 features wireless LAN technologyA useful addition to the N95's already impressive range of connectivity options is wireless LAN or WI-FI. This allows you to connect the N95 to your home wireless network or a public wireless hotspot (charges may apply).

I currently use this feature quite a lot with my current XDA Mini S - I can browse my home network and download selected files to my phone, browse the internet or download emails very quickly. The only feature that I could never get to work is the ability to "sync" the phone over the wireless network - The XDA runs on Windows and Microsoft disabled the wireless sync ability due to security reasons.

One good thing that I have just learnt is that you can download the GPS maps via wireless LAN - so instead of downloading large amounts of data via your GPRS / 3G connection you can either download maps at home before you set off on your journey or you can use a hotspot (if available) to get the latest maps for the area you are in / you are going to visit.

Nokia N95 Running Windows 3.1
User Rating: / 66

If you've ever wondered how far the technical breadth of the Nokia n95 can go, we have one marker. It can run Windows 3.1. Considering the OS was released in 1992, it's not a monumental feat, but still pretty cool none the less.

FrazPc.pl is the site where a user by the name, Marcinprv was able to configure his Nokia N95 to run Symbian, and Windows 3.1 side by side. He used a piece of software called, DOSBox. Unfortunately he doesn't provide any textual steps, but only posts pictures of his project. It's still cool none the less though, and worth checking out.

If you can figure out how he was able to get the OS functional, and are able to do it yourself then drop me a line. So we can get a tutorial of it up on the site.

Utilizing Your Camera More Effectively

Taking pictures with camera phones has been all the rage as of late. The Nintendo DSi, a video game system will ship with a camera. So, how can you utilize your Nokia n95 properly?

I'll provide some tips that should help you get started with you Nokia n95 cameraphone. First, did you know that your phone has two different cameras, and that each differ in terms of quality and size?

The high-res camera is on the back of your phone and is what is considered your 'main' camera.  The secondary camera or your 'low res' camera is on the front of your phone. Deciding which one to use is entirely up to you, and the situation you're in. I'd like to think that I would use the high-res camera for more important pictures, or potentially ones that I'd want to save. Vice versa for the secondary camera.

Something else you should keep in mind is that image quality (graniness) of the photo deteriorates once light is lost.  So when taking a photo with your camera, always make sure you're in a well lit area. For quality sake.

Something else you may not know is that you can send images during active calls. If you're on the phone with someone, press Options >> Send MMS.

I hope that these few tips have helped in trying to learn how to utilize your Nokia n95 camera phone.

Replacement Batteries

Only use GENUINE Nokia Batteries!I have recieved several emails in the last day or so asking about the best place to buy genuine N95 replacement batteries...

eBay is full of "N95 replacement batteries" but most of these are from Asia / the far east and at those prices MUST be copies / fakes. We would never endorse the use of these inferior betteries in the N95 - god knows the genuine Nokia batteries don't last that long so we can only assume these fakes are even worse!

Watching Movies On Your Nokia n95
User Rating: / 20
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 08 July 2009

A function that your Nokia n95 is capable of that you might not have known about is the ability to watch movies. Depending on the length of the movie, and the file size you'll be able to watch the movie. Here is a step by step instruction list to allow your phone to play movies.

What You'll Need:

 Nokia PC Suite

 DivX Mobile Player

When you have both Nokia PC Suite, and DivX Mobile Player downloaded you should begin the installation process. Once you have both files downloaded, you'll want to put the DivX Mobile Player onto your phone.

To do this,  right click on the Nokia PC Suite option in your toolbar. Select 'install applications'. Find the DivX Mobile Player program, and click on it. You should then be presented with an option to either install the program on your phone's memory or a memory card. You'll want to select the Phone's memory. If you get a failed message when installing DivX, there's  a quick fix...

If you're having problems installing, then get on your n95. Go under Applications, App Manager, options, and make sure you settings match this:

Software Installation: All

Online Certificate Check: Off

If you change those setting, then you'll want to switch them back after installing DivX for security purposes.

Next you'll want to find the DivX files themselves which can be found easily on the internet. The rest is rather simple. You'll want to use the Nokia PC suite again to transfer files to your phone from your computer. DivX allows for easy compression, so if you've installed the Mobile Player correctly you should be entirely setup for DivX viewing.

How To Be Notified When Someone Reads A Text From You
User Rating: / 23
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 20 May 2009

You've probably seen this kind of feature in emails before. Basicalll  it's a feature where by you're notified when the recipient of your text message opens it up and reads it. The function is simple to execute, and can be very useful if you rely on text messaging for your communication.

All you do is simply type *0# at the beginning of your message. Then be sure you make a space between the character and your actual text. What will then happen is that you'll be notified when the recipient actually opens the text up. It's an added text, but again it has its uses depending on how much you rely on texting.
